History

Overall Aims

The overall aims of the History curriculum are to enable students to:

  • discover where they stand in the contemporary world through understanding the origins and development of modern events;
  • develop the skills of critical thinking, making sound judgments and effective communication through exploring historical issues;
  • approach past and current events in an impartial and empathetic manner, using a variety of perspectives;
  • understand the characteristics and values of their own culture, and appreciate the shared humanity and common problems of the world’s many peoples; and
  • cultivate both national consciousness and the consciousness of being citizens of the global community, and thus become rational and sensible members of the local community, the nation and the world.

 

Features of the School-based Curriculum

Students are expected to master skills which will enable them to:

  • distinguish facts from opinions; detect biased viewpoints, ambiguous assumptions and unsubstantiated arguments; and build up proper historical perspectives;
  • compare and interpret historical data; arrive at reasoned conclusions based on available evidence; and recognise the fact that history is subject to reassessment based on the interpretation of new evidence;
  • present logical and coherent arguments through the proper selection and organisation of historical data; and
  • search for, select, analyse and synthesise information through various means, including the Internet, and consider various ways of arriving at conclusions and making appraisals.

The Ancient World (From Pre-historic Period to the 14th Century):

Human Needs: Past and Present; The Development of European Civilisation; The Rise of Islamic Civilisation and Cultural Interactions between Europe and Asia in Medieval Times; History, Culture and Heritage of Early Hong Kong Region

 

S.2

The Modern World (From the 15th Century to the 19th Century):

The Rise of Modern Europe; European Colonial Expansion; The Founding and Development of the United States; Growth and Development of Hong Kong up to the Late 19th Century

 

S.3

The Contemporary World (From the 20th Century to the Present):

International Conflicts and Crises in the 20th Century (I) – The Two World Wars; International Conflicts and Crises in the 20th Century (II) – the Cold War and the Post-Cold War Period; International Cooperation since the 20th Century; The Growth and Transformation of Hong Kong in the 20th Century

 

Senior Forms

The Making of the Modern World; Modernisation and Transformation in 20th Century Asia: Hong Kong, China, Japan and Southeast Asia; Conflicts and Cooperation in the 20th Century World: The Origins and Impact of the two World Wars and the Cold War; The Quest for Cooperation and Prosperity: International Economic, Social and Cultural Cooperation

 

Co-curricular Activities

Senior form students participated in activities such as History Day of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, May Fourth Movement Display Board Competition, and “The Road to Modernisation: 70 Years of the People’s Republic of China” Exhibition to learn outside the classroom and be exposed to historical values to grasp the learning content.

 

Junior form students joined the Junior Secondary History e-Reading Award Scheme both in 2020 and 2021 (The Award Scheme). The aims of the scheme are to encourage secondary schools to adopt e-reading as a means to arouse students’ interest in history learning and develop their ability to learn history through reading.

Senior form students participated in activities related to history in various organizations and universities including Historical Info Workshop organized by History and Hong Kong Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University College of International Education, History Day, MuseTeens Programmes, May Fourth Movement Display Board Competition, “The Road to Modernisation – 70 Years of the People’s Republic of China” Exhibition, etc.
